  • Google’s first Israeli acquisition: Google announced last month that it was acquiring Tel Aviv-basedLabPixies for a rumored $25 million. LabPixies was particularly attractive to Google due to the company’s role in developing some of the first and subsequently leading ‘gadgets’ for the iGoogle platform, Google’s alternative interactive home page. LabPixies products have garnered as many as one billion impressions a month while signing up 40 million users. One of its most popular products is ‘Flood-It,’ a game that involves dragging colored balls around the screen.

eWorkshop of the month

With 22 different technological eWorkshops, it is very hard to pick the 3 you will focus on this summer. To help you decide, each month we will introduce a different and exciting eWorkshop. For this month: 

Web design 1:

Are you interested to know how the website you visit everyday is built? Do you want to create a new and exciting website your friends will visit? This summer at eCamp, you can do just that!

Campers, who will choose the Web Design 1 workshop, will get themselves online! They will create their own website in HTML and add images, backgrounds and links. Everyone on this workshop can create a unique website, dedicated to a theme of their choice. Once the website is ready they would publish it on the web for everybody to surf.

Those who are interested in web designing, can continue to improve their skills with Web Design 2, and developed professional looking web pages using adobe Dreamweaver.

Summer 2010 fun facts
  • International experience - This summer, eCampers are going to meet people from 23 different countries. Can you guess in how many languages they will know how to say “Hello” by the end of the summer? 
  • Returning campers to eCamp are going to see some friendly faces this summer: about a 1/3 of last year’s eCampers are returning this year. Those who come for the first year in ecamp will also feel at home right from the beginning, thanks to the warm, caring and family style atmosphere in camp. 
  • We got new and exciting games for the console zone! One of the exciting games we got for you to play during Free Breeze, is DJ Hero – This amazing console game, following Guitar hero and Rock Band. Get into a DJ’s shoes and mix songs your friends would love to dance to. Want to see more about DJ Hero? Check out their website.
  • Where is the eCamp Staff coming from? Just like eCamp campers, our staff is international too and arrives from 6 different countries. They are well experienced at working with kids and teens and are experts in their professional fields. Among our staff you can find students and alumnus of technological departments of the finest academic institutes in Israel and across the world (such as MIT and Oxford)

  • Tel Aviv based company Soluto has won the luxuriousTechCrunch cup and beat over 20 other start-ups from all over the world.

    Soluto’s goal is to combat PC frustrations and improve PC users’ experience. Soluto has developed an application that dives deep into the Windows core and leverages collective wisdom to tell users which specific applications are really causing their PC frustrations, to what extent, why and how to solve the problem.

  • Israel dedicates huge sea-water purification plant - A huge new desalination facility on Israel’s Mediterranean seashore, with a network of pipes beneath the beach reaching far into the ocean, could help solve Israel’s chronic fresh water shortage. The plant, one of the largest in the world, turns sea water into drinking water. It stands next to the northern city of Hadera, the third of five large facilities that will dot the coastline, designed to provide two-thirds of the country’s drinking water and reroute the National Water Carrier, a water transport system that has sustained Israel for 50 years.

 

  • New computer programming language in Yiddish – Israeli company for computer sciences development “Eytam”, developed “Yiddish-Mama” a new educational programming language in Yiddish, that will help Ultra Orthodox kids and teens study computer sciences and help them with their technological skills. The developer of this program says his goal is to develop a programming for kids in many languages as possible in order to approach many kids and teens in different communities.

 

  • Israel invested 40 million shekels in opening and operating the Israel pavilion at the Expo 2010 exhibit in Beijing China. The pavilion is considered to be one of the most beautiful and sophisticated exhibitions at the expo show. Visitors can be impressed with Israeli innovations in the fields of High-Tech, medicine, agriculture and many more.

Phone Apps Development:

Did you ever download a cell phone application and wondered how it works? Do you have a great idea for a phone app that you want to share with the world? This summer at eCamp you can do just that!

Google Android operating system has already surpassed the iPhone in its number of users and traffic. This marks the Android as the number one cell phone platform in the world. This summer, campers who choose the Phone Apps development workshop could join the Android in its success – in this NEW workshop, campers will program simple apps and games for the most advanced Google Android phones. They will learn how to code in Java, run their own program on the phone and share them with their friends! This workshop is perfect for those who have previous experience with other programming languages.
